The Caribbean Artist as an Export Business

Afrobeats took the model the Caribbean invented and scaled it. The region's musicians are now rebuilding the machine that turns a rhythm into a catalog and a catalog into wealth.

The Caribbean has given the world more genres per capita than anywhere on earth, and captured a fraction of the value. Calypso, ska, reggae, dancehall and soca each traveled globally while the publishing, the masters and the touring infrastructure largely settled elsewhere. The region wrote the songs and rented out the rights.

A younger generation is treating music as a business to be owned rather than a talent to be discovered. That means keeping masters, registering publishing, building catalogs that pay for decades, and using streaming data to tour where the listeners actually are, rather than where a label once decided.

The lesson is next door. Afrobeats studied the Jamaican playbook and built the ownership layer the Caribbean often skipped. The region's advantage is its catalog and its credibility. The task is to stop leasing them and start banking them.
