Caribbean Fashion Wants to Be an Industry, Not Just a Carnival

The region dresses itself brilliantly for two days a year. The designers behind the mas are trying to turn that talent into a year-round business.

The Caribbean produces astonishing clothing under impossible deadlines every Carnival season, and then most of that skill goes quiet until the next one. A cohort of designers wants to change that, building labels that sell beyond the fete and beyond the diaspora nostalgia market.

The talent is not in question; the infrastructure is. Textile sourcing, small-batch manufacturing, retail and the fashion-week machinery that makes reputations all sit largely offshore, so a Caribbean designer often has to leave to scale.

The prize is a genuine regional fashion economy that exports more than mas costumes: ready-to-wear, resort, and a point of view. The region already dresses for the world’s cameras once a year. The question is whether it can get paid the other three hundred and sixty-three days.
