While its neighbors sold sand, the Nature Isle sold rainforest, rivers and scarcity. It is the most interesting tourism experiment in the region.

Dominica Bet Its Whole Brand on Not Being a Beach Island

Dominica has few of the white-sand beaches that define its neighbors, and it has turned that into a strategy. The Nature Isle sells rainforest, boiling lakes, rivers and dive sites, and prices them as scarcity rather than volume, courting the traveler who wants an interior, not a lounger.

It is a deliberately harder business. Nature tourism needs trails, guides, conservation and resilient infrastructure, the last tested brutally by hurricanes, and it will never move the headcount a mega-resort does. But it keeps more value local, spreads it inland, and cannot be copied by the next island with a beach.

Dominica’s wager is that the region’s mountains and forests are worth more standing than sold, and that a smaller number of higher-spending visitors is the better book of business. For islands weighing their watershed against another resort, it is the case study to study.
