The Jazz Weekends Are How the Caribbean Sells Itself to the High-Spending Traveler
Saint Lucia Jazz, the Barbados jazz scene, the Nevis and regatta weekends: the region’s music festivals are precision tools for filling premium rooms out of season.
The Caribbean jazz and blues circuit, Saint Lucia’s long-running jazz festival, Barbados’s jazz weekends, Nevis’s blues festival, the regatta parties of St Maarten and the BVI, is aimed squarely at a valuable traveler: older, wealthier, and willing to fly for a weekend of music in the sun.
That is deliberate. Unlike the mass-market draws, these events target premium rooms and off-peak weeks, and they convert a lineup into hotel nights, restaurant covers and global coverage of the destination. A festival is a marketing budget that also sells tickets.
The model’s weakness is fragility, dependent on sponsors, headliners and a calm storm season. Its strength is efficiency: for a small island, a well-run music weekend is among the cheapest ways to reach exactly the visitor it most wants.
