The Cooler Is the Most Important Object at Any Lime
Portable, communal and quietly political, the humble cooler is the piece of equipment Caribbean social life is built around.
Every serious lime has one at its center: the cooler, packed the night before with ice, drinks and often food, hauled to the beach, the savannah or the roadside, and defended like a small state. It is the reason a gathering can last all day without anyone leaving, and the reason nobody has to.
The cooler is communal by design. You bring yours, someone brings theirs, and the pooling of them is the unspoken etiquette of the cooler fete: everyone contributes, everyone shares, and the person who arrives empty-handed is noted. It is hospitality made portable.
It is also a quiet act of independence. The cooler is what lets the lime happen outside the bar, the venue and the cover charge, on public sand that belongs to everyone. The most important object at any lime is the one that keeps it free.
