The Domino Table Is Where the Caribbean Settles Its Arguments

Slammed tiles, sharp words and a crowd of onlookers: dominoes is the region’s unofficial national sport, played hardest exactly where the liming is best.

Under the almond tree, outside the rum shop, in the yard on a Sunday, the domino table is always going. The tiles are slammed down with a force that is half strategy and half theater, the trash talk is an art form, and a good game draws a crowd that is half the point. Dominoes is the Caribbean’s unofficial national sport, and its most reliable engine of ole talk.

It is a game of partnership and memory, played four-handed, where reading your partner without a word is the mark of a serious player. Whole reputations rest on it. So do small fortunes, and larger amounts of pride.

The table is a social leveler. Around it, rank and title fall away, and the only currency is whether you can play. That is why it sits at the heart of the lime: it is competition and company at once, and it costs nothing but the willingness to lose in public.
