The Fete: Anatomy of a Caribbean Party

Somewhere between a concert and a religion, the fete is how the region celebrates, mourns and does business. It has rules, even when it looks like it has none.

A fete is not simply a party. It is a form, with a structure as recognizable as a sonnet. There is the early lime while the crowd builds, the long climb as the selector reads the room, the peak when the right song lands and the whole floor moves as one, and the sweet, spent wind-down as the sky lightens. Carnival season is a calendar of them.

The fete has grades. The all-inclusive, premium and policed; the cooler fete, where you bring your own and the freedom is the point; the breakfast party that starts at dawn in paint and mud. Each is a different social contract, and Caribbean people read them instantly.

It is also an economy: promoters, sound crews, bar takings, costume and travel. But strip the money away and the fete is the region insisting, loudly and in rhythm, on joy as a birthright. That is the part no ticket fully captures.
