Friday Night Is Fish Fry Night: The Weekly Village Lime

Oistins in Barbados, Gros Islet in Saint Lucia, Anse La Raye down the coast: the weekly fish fry is where a village turns its catch into a party the whole island shows up for.

Every Friday, in fishing villages across the region, the grills come out, the sound systems go up, and the week’s catch becomes the center of a street party. Barbados has Oistins, Saint Lucia has the Gros Islet jump-up and the Anse La Raye Friday fish fry, and a dozen other islands run their own version. It is street food, live music and lime rolled into one weekly institution.

The economics are entirely local. The fishermen sell to the vendors, the vendors grill through the night, the bars and speaker boxes draw the crowd, and the money circulates within the village rather than flowing to a resort. It is one of the few tourism draws the community owns outright.

It is also, quietly, one of the most authentic experiences the region offers a visitor: no ticket, no dress code, the same flying fish and marlin the locals are eating, at the same plastic table. The fish fry is proof that the best of Caribbean nightlife was never behind a resort gate.
