‘Liming’ Is the Caribbean’s Word for the Thing the Rest of the World Is Trying to Relearn

Doing nothing, together, on purpose. The Trinidadian word has gone regional because it names an economy of time the Caribbean never lost.

To lime is to gather with no purpose beyond the gathering. The word is Trinidadian, the practice is regional, and it describes something the wellness industry now sells back to exhausted cities at a premium: unstructured, unhurried, in-person time.

A lime can happen anywhere, on a wall, a beach, a bridge, outside a rum shop, and it has its own etiquette. You bring something, you stay a while, you contribute to the talk. It is leisure without consumption at its center, which is precisely what makes it hard to monetize and easy to lose.

The Caribbean protects the lime instinctively because it is one of the few forms of wealth the region has always had in surplus. As the islands sell more of their time by the room-night and the tour ticket, the unpriced lime becomes quietly radical: proof that the good life was never only the thing you paid for.
