Route Taxi Radio: The Rolling Sound System of the Caribbean Commute

The shared taxi and the maxi are how much of the region moves, and the music, the banter and the driver’s selection turn the daily commute into a lime on wheels.

For millions across the region, the route taxi and the maxi are the way to work, to town and back home. They are also a culture unto themselves: the driver’s sound system set to his own taste, the front-seat conversation that pulls in the whole vehicle, the regulars who know one another and the newcomers who learn fast. The commute is a rolling lime.

It is an informal transit system that moves the working majority the formal buses never fully served, run by owner-drivers on known routes, in cash, on a schedule that is really just whenever the vehicle fills. It is efficient in ways a planner would struggle to design and impossible in ways a planner would struggle to fix.

And it is a soundtrack. The maxi with the loudest system and the sharpest selector earns a following, and the music a region listens to is partly decided on those routes. The commute, like everything else in the Caribbean, is done to a beat.
