Sint Maarten and Curacao Turn On Deposit Insurance from September 28

From September 28, savers in Sint Maarten and Curacao gain formal protection for their money for the first time under a Deposit Guarantee Scheme from the Central Bank of Curacao and Sint Maarten. Bank deposits are covered up to Cg 50,000 per depositor, and credit-union deposits up to Cg 25,000.

Deposit insurance is one of the quiet foundations of a modern financial system. It turns a bank run from a rational panic into an unnecessary one, because a covered saver has no reason to rush the door. For a monetary union that has worked through the difficult resolution of failed institutions, putting a guarantee behind the ordinary depositor is a signal of stability as much as a piece of consumer protection.

The measure also draws a clear line under who is protected and to what limit, which is itself useful information for households deciding where and how to hold their savings. The caps are per depositor, so the practical planning point for a saver above the limit is how deposits are spread.
