Persad-Bissessar returns as Trinidad prime minister in UNC landslide
The United National Congress ousted the People's National Movement in the April election, returning Kamla Persad-Bissessar to office for a second time.
The UNC won 26 of 41 seats in the 28 April 2025 vote, to the PNM's 13 and the Tobago People's Party's 2, the party's strongest result since its founding. Persad-Bissessar was sworn in on 1 May.
The outgoing prime minister, Stuart Young, had served 43 days, the shortest tenure in the country's history. The result resets the politics of the region's largest energy economy.
